Worms - Internal parasites

There are a number of different types of worms that can potentially reside in goats. The first signs of a significant parasite contamination are lethargy, rough hair coat, weight loss, poor appetite, may have diarrhea, and anemia.  Parasite eggs can be easily picked up during normal grazing, with worm loads increasing with increasing stocking density, warm & damp weather and infrequent de-wormings.

To make sure that the best  dewormer is used, it is advisable to obtain fecal samples and consult with a veterinarian to determine the exact worm issues.  Goats should be dewormed before they are turned out on pasture, and again several weeks later.  Rotating goats among different pastures will help keep parasite loads down too.  Safe Guard® and Rumatel® are two wormers approved for use in goats.  Your veterinarian can help provide more specific worming recommendations.
